There are two important lessons we can learn from Adam and Eve’s relationship.
“And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone….’” (Genesis 2:18)
When God made Adam, he was alone in paradise. He didn’t have to put any effort into receiving all the goodness that was available to him in the Garden of Eden. He had everything he wanted at his disposal and didn’t have to share it with anyone.
God didn’t just bring Eve to Adam to solve his issue of loneliness, but also to give him the opportunity to learn how to be more giving. One of the reasons why God said that it was not good for man to be alone, was because Adam, at the time, was in a position of only receiving and didn’t know how to give.
This is also why Jesus said: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). You have surely given a gift to your partner or loved one before, and you know that this verse reinforces how blessed you feel after giving. When you give, you will receive, as the Bible also says: “Give, and it will be given to you.” (Luke 6:38).
“…I will make him a helper comparable to him.’” (Genesis 2:18)
Here, God describes the ideal partner – the type of person you have to look for and also the kind of partner you need to be in order to have a happy relationship. Adam had this privilege because he did not choose his partner, God chose for him.
To be a helper is about more than simply doing things for the person. It’s about supporting your partner; being on the same team; identifying their needs; being there during difficult times; being a good listener and praying together. It’s about being as one.
To be comparable is when both halves complement each other. They may be different, but they depend on each other and work together in all things. This applies to faith, as well as in life.
From just one verse, God highlights the criteria for a successful relationship. Let’s learn from Adam and Eve and apply these lessons to ensure a blessed love life.
