Do you know what the distance is between paradise and suffering in your love life? 30cm. This is the distance between your brain and your heart, between reason and feelings. If asked to choose between living in paradise or in suffering and pain, the obvious answer would be paradise.
The Garden of Eden was paradise because God’s will prevailed there. However, when Adam and Eve decided to do their own will by eating the forbidden fruit, paradise turned into to suffering. God gave them free will – we all still have this right – but they made a poor decision and suffered because of it.
“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.” (Genesis 3:6)
The devil wanted to destroy both Adam and Eve, not just the woman, and he wants to destroy you too, because every time he looks at you, he sees God. After all, we were made in His own image. The devil had to study the couple, just as he studies us today, to find out how to achieve his goal. Therefore, he knows our strengths and weaknesses.
The devil knew that Adam had received the direction regarding the forbidden tree straight from God. However, Eve didn’t hear God’s voice; she only heard the voice of her husband. Satan had to wait for the perfect time to strike – that time being when the couple were far from one another. In the same way, many couples are physically together, but live separate lives, and the devil uses that opportunity to attack their love life.
If Adam and Eve had been by the tree together, would the serpent still have approached them? He would have had to think twice, as they would have been able to confirm what God had said to one another to counterattack his lies.
The snake had observed Eve’s strengths and weaknesses. He saw that she was emotionally fragile and also noted her power of influence. A woman’s choice of words can impact whether her husband lives in paradise or suffering. Adam also allowed himself to be influenced by emotion, thus a life-changing mistake that affected the rest of humanity was made. Couples are making poor decisions in the heat of the moment because they are using emotions over intelligence.
If you want your love life to be paradise, you need to know when to leave your emotions aside. They’re not tools to resolve problems. Feelings blind you, which is why people say things they later regret, but have to suffer the consequences of the decisions they’ve already made.
If you are still single, you have the choice to make an intelligent decision when choosing a partner. As long as you are making thoughtful love-based decisions, then you’re not alone because God is with you. Those who are hidden in God will only be found by those who find Him first. Remember that what made the Garden of Eden a paradise was that God’s will was sovereign. So, as you are hidden in the will of God, someone will have to do the same in order to find you. Then, you will have the guarantee that the fruit of that relationship will be blessed.
