“Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah as wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan Aram, the sister of Laban the Syrian. Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived.” (Genesis 25:20-21)
Isaac saw in his marriage the same thing that had happened to his parents marriage. His wife Rebekah was barren just like his mother Sarah. Isaac received no advice, but had to manifest his faith.
In some situations in your love life, there is nothing that will resolve the problem but faith. Faith is not just a confession or belief; after all, it’s not hard to say you believe. It is also not the acknowledgment that God exists. Faith is obedience to God’s words.
When Abraham faced the difficulty of knowing his wife couldn’t bear children, he didn’t know God yet. He had no references to look to. God said that he would make of Abraham a great nation and he believed in that word, but he had to use his faith based on that promise. On the other hand, Sarah most likely blamed herself and tried to use a physical solution to fix the problem by telling her husband to sleep with her servant Hagar.
Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife – he used his faith. He didn’t accept the situation; he had his father’s example to follow. How many examples exist of people who were completely hopeless in love or who came from broken homes, but are now happy and have their own families? They understood that they had to do the right thing as well as manifest their faith.
We should never forget that there are things that only God can help us with, and we should never leave faith out of the equation. Sarah couldn’t fix her problem and, unfortunately, she made the wrong decision. However, Isaac didn’t want to go through what his parents went through.
Why would God allow Isaac to have a barren wife if He was the One who chose Rebekah for him? It’s because struggles and obstacles are a part of the process to maturity. There are things God allows us to go through for us to become stronger and better. You can choose to see the problem with bad eyes and complain or decide to be tomorrow’s testimony. Going through problems causes you to depend on God more. Some only use their faith when they are in church, but don’t exercise it when they are alone or out of the church environment, which is where they face the obstacles of life and their faith is put to the test.
“But the children struggled together within her; and she said, “If all is well, why am I like this?” So she went to inquire of the Lord.” (Genesis 25:22)
You may have no idea why you are struggling with this love life problem, and you may question yourself just like Rebekah did, but it’s because you have accepted the way you are. God has given you the conditions you need to overcome. He allows problems because you need to be better; because your faith needs to mature; because God wants you to be an example for your family. If He changed Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and so many others, He can change you too! No one has ever given a testimony to glorify God saying that they gave up, so the first step to changing your life is not accepting your problems.
Use your faith, don’t give up and you will have the testimony you long for!
